The GNC constantly monitors each and every one of the over 600 trains in operation every day and can immediately respond to any operating failures, accidents and other incidents. The advanced rail traffic management control centre, known as the Gauteng Nerve Centre (GNC), accommodates 35 control rooms in a single location. However, suitable methods such as barriers and traffic signals should be used when possible to help with the task.A state-of-the-art control centre has opened in the South African province of Gauteng integrating rail traffic management from 35 existing control rooms. The CCOSH only recommends traffic control persons only when other methods are inadequate or insufficient. Traffic control persons must also have an action plan to protect themselves in an emergency, for example when a vehicle does not follow instructions or loses control. The CCOSH lists the minimum Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for traffic control persons, which must be CSA approved: high-visibility vest, hard hat, safety shoes, safety goggles and earplugs. This course meets the Ontario Traffic Manual – Book 7 – Temporary Conditions and OSHA Safety Standards. In most Canadian provinces and territories, training is legally required for traffic control persons, and each jurisdiction has its own laws.
